Sports Broadcaster and Baltimore Ravens Play-by-Play Announcer

Professional Background

Gerard “Gerry” Edward Sandusky (born September 5, 1961) is an Emmy Award-winning sports broadcaster who has become synonymous with Baltimore sports. As sports director at WBAL-TV and the radio play-by-play voice of the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens, Sandusky brings decades of experience and genuine passion to his coverage.

Sports and Baltimore run in his blood. His father, John Sandusky, played for the Cleveland Browns and Green Bay Packers before coaching in the NFL, including a stint as head coach of Baltimore’s own Colts. Growing up in Baltimore until age 12 and attending Towson’s Immaculate Heart of Mary School while his dad coached the Colts, Gerard developed an early love for the city that would later define his career.

That connection brought him full circle, from Baltimore kid to one of the region’s most respected sports voices. He’s also a New York Times bestselling author of “Forgotten Sundays” and runs The Sandusky Group, a leadership communications company.

Experience and Expertise

After launching his broadcasting career at WSVN-TV in Miami, Gerry returned home to Baltimore, where his deep knowledge and storytelling ability have earned widespread recognition. Since joining WBAL-TV in 1988, Gerry has become one of the longest-tenured sports directors in major market television.

He’s won two Emmy Awards—first in 1992 for his compelling story on Memorial Stadium’s uncertain future, then in 2003 for his moving tribute to Johnny Unitas.

Ravens fans know him best for his signature call, “The hay’s in the barn,” after victories. Yet, Gerry’s expertise extends beyond the booth. Through The Sandusky Group, he helps business leaders develop the same communication skills and confidence that have made him Baltimore’s most trusted sports voice.

Education and Personal

Gerry knows sports from the inside out. He played football and basketball at Towson University before graduating in 1983 with degrees in Finance and Economics.

He is also very active in the community. Gerry and his wife Lee Ann founded the Joe Sandusky Fund through the Baltimore Community Foundation and raise money for scholarships to financially needy youngsters in the Baltimore area. The fund honors Sandusky’s late brother, Joe, a football player at the University of Tulsa, who tragically lost his life at 19 from septic shock caused by pneumonia.

In 2014, Gerry Sandusky also authored his first book, Forgotten Sundays, with a foreword by Baltimore Ravens Head Coach John Harbaugh. Forgotten Sundays is Gerry Sandusky’s coming-of-age story about a son’s relationship with his father.
